This is a blog to document my process in the Graphic Design IV Course.
Project III
Based on the concept of culture. Using the form and structure of the book, create an explanation of how this concept works. Your challenge is to dispute the supposed monotony and disposibility of the everyday book object and suggest new directions in the presentation of information within the book format. It is your task as a book designer to instigate a conversation with the reader either through a dialogical or collaborative process.
Objective
Singapore being a multi racial country, a mix of languages is often used in the local scene. This project aims to investigate how the words of encouragement in striving one’s best, specifically in terms such as the Chinese’s “Jiayou 加油” and the japanese’s “Ganbatte がんばって” which both commonly translate as “doing one’s best” in English, push or even dampen one’s capabilities to achieve. In doing so, motivation to achieve in general mankind is examined and linked back to the subject of how words of encouragement play a part in motivation.
Project I
You have in front of you, the last flower of its kind on earth. There will never be another one. Document it before it dies, in any way necessary to retain its essence, for future generations. This may include drawing, photography, writing, film, print, 'other'. Consider any and all media in your investigations, as a means to capture the 'experience' of the flower, as well as its physical attributes.
Choose your own flower to document: it must be a single flower. As it dies, you may not replace your flower with another one of its kind. Its decay is part of the process you need to document.
Concept Statement:
In an attempt to preserve what the sunflower is well remembered for, this project aims to document the sunflower of its positive qualities and personality in standing contrast to its unfortunate predicament. The last sunflower on this Earth bears a responsibility to be captured in essence representing its species human kind has associated them as. Main qualities such as the sunflower's joy, warmth, loyalty, optimism and admiration will be represented in a series of day by day illustration to its eventual death. The illustrations will demonstrate a transformation from life to death yet encompassing the sunflower’s bold and bright spirit.
